“Because of The Whole Child and the amazing work that Marilyn does for my boys, we have been able to conquer so many things that have come into our lives,” says Isabel, a single mother and special education teacher in Whittier. “Whether it’s challenges at school, friendships, family issues, anxious moments, or life’s highs and lows, our little family of three not only navigates through it, but we continue to live and thrive through it.”
As a single mother and special education teacher in Whittier, Isabel understood early on the importance of providing her sons, Giuseppe (11) and Luca (8), with the support they needed to thrive. Through The Whole Child’s mental health services, both boys were connected with Marilyn, a therapist who became a trusted source of guidance, encouragement, and support.
Over time, Giuseppe and Luca have developed healthy coping skills, learned how to better understand and express their emotions, and gained tools to navigate everyday challenges. For Luca, therapy has also provided critical support in managing his ADHD diagnosis and building confidence in himself. What once felt overwhelming has become more manageable through consistent care and support.
The impact has extended beyond the boys themselves. Therapy has strengthened communication within the family, helping Isabel and her sons face challenges together with greater understanding, resilience, and hope.
This Mental Health Awareness Month, we celebrate families like Isabel’s whose commitment to seeking support has helped transform obstacles into opportunities for growth. Their story is a powerful reminder that when children and families have access to mental health care, they can heal, grow, and thrive together.
